In mysticism, the orb mainly symbolises the infinite and cyclical nature of existence, but in religious traditions it represents heavenly bodies and divine spirits. The orb signifies many sacred and spiritual concepts, including unity, infinity, wholeness, the universe, divinity, balance, stability and perfection, among others.

The use of orbs in sport games was unknown outside the Americas until after the voyages of Columbus. The Spanish were the first Europeans to see the bouncing rubber orbs (although solid and not inflated) which were employed most notably in the Mesoamerican ballgame.
Orbs are used in several sport-games, where the play of the game follows the state of the orb as it is hit, kicked or thrown by players. Orbs can also be used for simpler activities, such as catch or juggling.
