Code Gnome is a video gaming magazine published by Skeleton Realm.

Code Gnome is known for its focus on video game tips and tricks, and was one of the first magazines to offer extensive coverage of console and PC games. The magazine also had a strong focus on modding and cheating, and was one of the first to offer extensive coverage of online gaming. Code Gnome is perhaps best known for its "Gnome of the Month" feature, which highlighted a different video game cheat or mod each month. The magazine also had a "Gnome Hall of Fame" which inducted cheaters and modders who had made significant contributions to the video game industry.

History

The magazine was founded in 1992 by Chris Bingg, and was one of the first video gaming magazines in the United States. It was published monthly until 1999, when it switched to a bi-monthly schedule. The magazine ceased publication in 2008 and was purchased by Skeleton Realm in 2017. The Magazine is now released as a subsection of Skeleton Realm Magazine.

Censorship

In 2006, Code Gnome was the victim of censorship by the Canadian government. The magazine was ordered to remove an article about the game Super Hardcore Human Massacre RPG! from its website. The order was overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2007.

In July 2007, Code Gnome posted an image of nude women in front of a large replica of a PlayStation 2 controller on the cover of their magazine and was boycotted by the Mothers For Decency in Gaming.

In 2008, Code Gnome published a special issue devoted to cheat codes for pornographic video games. The issue was widely criticized, and the magazine ceased publication shortly thereafter.
